Friday July 7th
VoL & Prom

I spent a long time on Friday just waiting.  Waiting mainly for the Vigilantes of Love to take the stage.  It was worth it.

Friday brought a few interesting acts other than the Vigilantes of Love.  We saw parts of Brave St. Saturn - the side project of a few members of Five Iron Frenzy.  Steve bought their album - and we both like it. Sam Ashworth (yes, Charlie Peacock's son) played the Acoustic Stage Friday afternoon.

After Sam Ashworth, I (Becky) convinced Matt to join me to see John Fischer.  John is among my favorite contemporary authors, and seeing him at Cstone each year is a treat.  John spoke mostly from his book 12 Steps for the Recovering Pharisee (like me).  The crowd was small, but dedicated.  John came as a guest of ESA Tidbits - Cornerstone Speakers:

Cornerstone is much more than music.  Though, from looking at these pages, you might not realize it.  This year, we didn't attend as many seminars as normal - something I regret.  But, there were many topics to choose from, including:
Naturalism, Logic, Jehovah Witnesses, Woldviews and Evangelism, Social Justice, Sharing your faith with Jewish people, Evangelicalism, Homosexuality, Intimacy in Marriage, Dating, Church Ministry Leadership, Poetry, CS Lewis and Myth, X-Files and Truth, Tolkien, The Magic of Star Wars, plus seminars at the Wycliff Tent and the ESA/Prism tent.

Tidbits:

Sam Ashworth wrote a song on Sixpence None the Richer's self-titled album.

Hints - Cornerstone Speakers:

Bring a notebook, pen, and your Bible to the speakers sessions.  You may want to take notes.  Also, most of the speakers are happy with talking to listeners - so here's your chance.  I sat next to a man at John Fischer's seminar who had given John the idea for the 12 steps book after last year's Cstone session.  So - talk to these people and learn from them, and let them learn from you.

Soul-Junk played early Friday.

Joy Electric played two shows during the fest.  The first, on Tooth and Nail day, and the second, shown here, offered two different musical styles.  It's strange to consider - but Joy Electric left their electric style behind for songs from their Unplugged album.
Hints - The Money Changers Tent:

There are several merchandise tents located in the main center area.  We often affectionately call them the Money Changing Tents, though they aren't quite that evil. :-)

You can find your typical assortment of christian t-shirts, bumper stickers, jewelry, etc.  You can also find interesting artistic clothing and official festival shirts.  In addition, almost every band has a booth in one of the tents.  There's a CBS-type music store in the large tent too - where you can buy cd's and posters and such from artists not at the fest this year.   And, if you still haven't found what you're looking for, the RadRockers booth has lots of out-of-print music to choose from.

Notice the Phantom Tollbooth banner - located in the Indoor Stage (which doubles as Encore I at night.)
Tidbits - Postcards:

The Bushnell Rotary Club sets up a booth across from the main merch tent.  They sell popsicles, stamps, and festival postcards.  I got a postcard this summer and had it autographed by a few bands, and a bunch of friends - then I sent it to a friend back home.

Other bands we saw Friday:

Larry Norman - and his press conference, which was quite interesting
MxPx
The Gene Eugene Tribute, with Adam Again

Friday afternoon, while most of our friends went to the VoL press conference, I sat in the Gallery Tent waiting for their actual show.  This reminds me of one suggestion for the Cstone scheduling people: do not schedule two bands like Ballydowse and the Vigilantes of Love together.  It's just not smart. The two groups draw distinctly different crowds.  It might be easier and more enjoyable for all fans involved to change the schedule.
The Vigilantes offered one of the bests of the fest, as always.
There were a few glitches - the lights went out, the sound failed for a few seconds, and there was one fan who stood up right in front of us through the first half of the show - but overall, there's very little that can dampen our enthusiasm for this little band from Athens, Georgia.

The band opted to play mostly new songs.  The lack of old favorites, like Double Cure, or Struggleville, did annoy a few fans.  But, the new songs are great - and we thank the band for sharing them.  And, really - I bet they get tired of playing those older songs day in and day out.

Hints - Albums to Buy:

If you haven't already - you need to get the Vigilantes latest album: Audible Sigh.

Tidbits:

VoL's merch table had lots of stuff for sale, including old posters, new t-shirts, and a re-printing of Bill's short book Perishable Goods.

These pictures capture a few of Bill's key poses, and also Kevin's great hair.  Yes, he looks like the Muppet "Animal."
Tidbits - Behind the Music:

Since I've started helping with set-up at my church, I've realized what a task it is to be behind all the music at Cornerstone.  Each band needs different mic set-ups, a different mix in the moitors, different placement of guitar amps, etc.  And, for all shows, somebody is running the light board and sound board to ensure we get to see and hear a quality show.  Thanks much to the tech crews at the various stages.  Your work is appreciated!

Friday Night at C2K brought the first ever Cornerstone Prom.  Jason and the G-Men and This Train played for the prom, held at the Creation Station building.  Some people actually came prepared for the event - in their fancy dresses and suits.  Others came complete with layers of sweat and mud from enjoying the fest all day.  We were among the latter.
Tidbits - Creation Station:

Creation Station, located past the main Merch tent, seves a great purpose with Cornerstone's youngest audience.  They have songs and games and lots of fun activities planned for kids of all ages.

Here are Matt and I dancing.  We weren't so good at swing dancing, but did much better at slow dancing.

And, let me take this chance to publicly apologize for calling Matt the "worst dancer in the world."  I should not have said that - mainly because it isn't true!  And, I certainly should not have said it to all of our friends.  So, will you forgive me?  please?

Tidbits - Cstone Prom:

This was the first year for the Cornerstone Prom.  I wonder if it will be an annual occurrence.  And, I also wonder if other festivals will copy this next year.

Tidbits - Crowds:

As the photo above shows - crowds can get rather intense during certain shows.  Security works hard to keep shows from getting rowdy, but from time to time, things get a bit crazy.  Be courteous to those around you - don't push to the point of injury, and allow yourself and others a little bit of room to breathe.
